| This tool was developed in conjunction with B.N.F.L. partners to aid in the decommisioning of the Windscale Advanced Gas Cooled Nuclear Reactor. Subsequent to the removal of the outer shield cover plates, the graphite reflector bricks had to be removed. UDCE developed a PLC controlled unit that is positioned using a laser location indicator to align over the desired area. The operator then closes and holds one button until the unit engages the itself to the graphite brick by means of three "Drill Taps" which are driven by a single motor. As the Drill-Taps engage, the unit is drawn into the brick due to the threads on the drill-taps.
Once engaged, the tool is used as an "eye bolt" to lift the brick clear of its seat. The brick is then positioned over the waste basket and the release button is
pressed. The tool will stop automatically once the brick is released. All the logic is controlled using proximity sensors in conjunction with the
PLC. |
