| This tool was developed in conjunction with B.N.F.L. partners to aid in the decommissioning of the Windscale Advanced Gas Cooled Nuclear Reactor. An application had been identified for the removal of the outer shield cover plates, which are located above the main graphite reflector bricks. UDCE developed a PLC controlled unit that is lifted into position and locates around the tie rod using a removable Vee block. Once the fully automatic cycle is initiated the Vee block is removed using an electro-solenoid and the electro-magnet is engaged. The drill motor then starts and the automatic downward traverse engages. The specially designed quick release cutters skim the outside diameter of the tie rod whilst cutting a larger hole on it's outside diameter to facilitate the removal of the plate. Once the motor has traversed to the predefined depth, it automatically rapid traverses back to the start position and resets the Vee block and releases the magnet. The drill is now ready to be lifted and repositioned. |
